The Rise of Private Credit: Preparing for the Next Phase in the Credit Cycle

All long-term predictions of the future were put to the test two years ago when the pandemic led to unexpected shifts in the markets. Private credit markets became crowded as investors tackled the markets and assets flowed in, some from new allocators and some from existing allocators adding to their mandates. Two years down the road, where do investors see the potential in their portfolios? After a generally very successful last few years, where are investors in private credit to go from here?

There is still the need to continue to navigate the unprecedented changes in the market as many of the impacts wrought by the pandemic are proving to be less transitory than anticipated It’s true that private credit markets performed better in some ways than the public markets, but what is the long-term outlook now? With an extended period of inflation, rising interest rates, shifts in supply chains, a shift in influence on workers, and geopolitical unrest, what are the macro drivers in the economy likely to be going forward? And which industries and sectors will benefit – and which won’t?
