10AM–1PM Tour and Conversation
Location: Applied Minds
2937 N. Ontario St, Burbank, CA 91504
There are few renaissance men these days. Bran Ferren is one of them. The Wikipedia summary for him—“An American technologist, artist, architectural designer, vehicle designer, engineer, lighting and sound designer, visual effects artist, scientist, lecturer, photographer, entrepreneur, and a prolific inventor”—arguably understates his interests, expertise, and accomplishments.
Ferren’s three Academy Awards for technical, scientific, and engineering achievement give a better sense of his breadth, as does the decade he spent at various CTO roles at Disney Corp, where his final title was President of Research and Development of Walt Disney Imagineering. His 2014 TED talk, “To Create for the Ages, Let's Combine Art and Engineering,” has been viewed over a million times.
Nowadays, Ferren's main gig is Applied Minds, a design and creativity think tank he cofounded in 2000. The usual description, “a team of engineers, scientists, and designers that provides design and technology services” doesn’t nearly capture the work it does and the ways in which it combines delightfulness and practicality. The magazine Wired came closer to the mark when it wrote, “It's as if Willy Wonka's chocolate factory just yawned wide to welcome us. Only here, all the candy plugs in.”
On November 16, we’ll spend a morning touring Applied Minds to see some of its researchers’ current projects. We’ll also speak with Bran about a variety of topics, including:
- AI in Entertainment
- Design Strategies in the IoT Era
- The Future of Human Work and Creativity
Please join us in our visit to the chocolate factory where all the candy plugs in.
“What people mean by the word "technology" is the stuff that doesn't really work yet.” -- Bran Ferren
